BEHIND THE SCENES

Section 3 Kate. Sydney.

Mon, 11 Sep 2000

Hi,
I recieved information on your project through work (OVEN Digital). I am
interested in learning more about your project and shooting one of the
sections. I have a digial video camera, and have worked in film, as a
co-ordinator and a sound editor. I have also done video camera work for a
small docos and short films in NYC. I am currently directing a self-funded
documentary about farm dogs.
I am based in Sydney, Australia so if you want to take advantage of that
location it would be better for me not to shoot the int. hotel scenes. There
is a tall tower in the center of Sydney (creatively named Sydney Tower) that
has a great view of the city all the way out to the Blue Mountains. You can
see the Opera House, Sydney Harbour, Hyde Park, the cathedral etc etc. from
it.
Anyway, If you are interested in having a section shot in Sydney, let me
know.

I'm happy to shoot section 3. Coupla questions tho:
When do you expect to need the footage?
Do you want it to establish itself in Australia, or be "generic-land".
Because I can establsh the location by the name of the station (english: St
James or Town Hall - Australian: Warrawee). I could also shoot in the
country, with a country station and an outback motel.
Also, it is a bit in advance, but to save you shipping costs if you email
pics of the props when you have them maybe I can find similar ones here.
Otherwise it may cost a heap to send the originals.
See ya,
Kate

I don't have a site you can link to, but I;ll try and write a brief bio and
send it to you.
First week in Nov to get the props and then shoot and send them onto HK by
last week of Nov is ok. Gives me about two weeks to shoot.

No sweat.
Prior to shooting I will send you a shot list so you can check if I will
cover everything you need.
Kate
PS. Does NTSC mini DV as a format work for you? 'Coz my DV camera is having
issues, but there is a really good one I can get my hands on, except that it
is NTSC.

The hotel stuff went very well. Little did I realise how hard it is to frame
a shot to get the action without showing too much face!!
I am shooting the train station tomorrow night, and will send the fottage to
you and the props to HK on Thurs.
Sorry about the delays, but the website company I work for went belly-up and
I have been in a world of pain.

Hi Julie,
well I have some very bad news for you. I have not yet mailed the tape, i
can send it tomorrow.
Unfortunately, there is a problem with the sound on the tape. The audio was
not being monitored correctly, and thus the sound recordist (and i use that
term loosely) did not notice there was a bad earth hum being recorded to
tape. I have trying to find someone who can engineer the noise out, but
seems like the best advice I have been given so far is to foley the edited
footage.
Another major problem is that the props were mailed out by my husband while
I was away for the weekend ... I had not yet shot the train station scene.
ARRRGGGHHHH....
So what i propose is this ... have the guy in HK mail the props back to me,
and I will reshoot as quickly as possible and send you the new tape. In the
meantime I will send you the footage I do have.
I can hardly appologise for this situation enough. It probably occurred
because I have been under intense stress lately through losing my job (and
source of income) and not checking everyone's work ....
Let me know how to proceed.

Hi Julie,
Glad the footage looks ok. Yeah, we spent a long time plotting out the
action and rehearsing so we could get good camera angles of action with no
faces. Just a total bummer about the sound (gonna kill that fucker)
The footage comes from Sydney. The hotel is actually a serviced apartment
complex in Pyrmont. You know, kinda like a long-stay hotel but without room
service and it looks like a cross between an apartment and a hotel room. I
walked past it every day on my way to work, so when we needed a hotel room,
and all the swank ones by the harbour said no, I organised to shoot there.
It is pretty scary complex - it is how I would imagine a florida retirement
home would look like. Lots of faux tropical landscaping and bad carpet.
Pyrmont is a suburb very close to the city -15 min walk. The area is fast
becoming the silicon alley of Sydney.
The shoot in the hotel went pretty smoothly. The first thing we did was go
over and over the actor's action addin, deleting and changing movements each
time. Then we chose each camera angle and viewed the action from each
position to make sure we could get good footage without seeing faces.
Then we shot it. It was shot by my husband, Jon Steiner. The two actors are
Eduardo Chavez (orig from venezuela) and Martha Malic (ori from Canada).
We shot on a panasonic AG EZ1 mini dv.
I will send the postage receipts if I can find them - house is a distster
zone - but they came out of my budget, so you don't have to send money to
me.
Lookin forward to seeing the end result.
Later,
Kate
