Julie Myers

Julie's Weekend

Section 2 Julie. London.

Fri, 21 Jul 2000 10:38:12 +0100

Hello Lahary
I am glad to hear you’ve made your choice I realise section 4 is your second choice but section one has already been allocated.
We thought that every director would shoot about 10-15 mins of source material this would include bad takes, thing that went wrong and any additions the director wanted to make the final piece will be about 20 mins long . . . .
all the footage should be sent to me unedited
If all this is acceptable then the next stage would be for us to work out a suitable time for you to start and for me to send you the first instalment of the money for materials and expenses and the props.
all the best

Thu, 03 Aug 2000 12:39:46 +0100

Hi Lahary

Its the other directors that have to worry about hiding the girl in your section the more we see of the real her the better Ideally the footage should be shot through Aug returned to me at the end of Aug . The problem is that everyone has to use the same props- its these details that are going to hold it together
I have two of everything so the first pair to shoot (which at the moment is you - section 4 and 5)
But the props - handbag, brand of cigarettes and the lighter are important and must be seen clearly in the shots I will send you this package asap where shall I send it to ?
I'll email you an agreement for you and a consent form for actors in the next couple of days
yep 15- 20 mins
anything that works best for you . . . .. . but keep in mind your section is the only one with the opportunity to see the girl talking
I'll be in touch soon
hope all is well

Dear Antony I enjoyed your web sites very much especially seeking city – it felt like being a detective - very visual and engaging to use The video collaboration I would like to invite you to participate in is a collaboration between seven artist/filmmakers in different parts of the world using is a script that is a simple set of instructions. Each director chooses a section he wants to video and shoots the section using their own style and their own city as a backdrop for the story. The footage is then sent back to me in London where it is edited together. Each director will be given credit for their own section and a contract of authorship. You can make the footage digital or analogue - any quality is ok The directors will shoot their section during Aug Sept and we hope to edit will edit in London in Oct/Nov you can read the script on line at www.julie9.org and email me your 1st and 2nd choice of the section you would like to video look forward to hearing from you julie

Fri, 04 Aug 2000 13:10:17 +0100

Hello scott

I am very pleased you feel able to get involved with the film collaboration The next stage is for you to select the section of the script you want to work on Section 4 and 1 are already taken - but all the other sections are up for grabs - just let me know your 1st and 2nd choice and I'll reserve one for you. Ideally the filming will be done through out Aug and Sept - (Edited in Oct) Each director will probably shoot about 10 - 15 mins of footage All the best Julie

Tue, 08 Aug 2000 14:27:36 +0100

Scott I think section 5 is a good one - why don't you do that
The only thing to be aware of in 5 is that it is the only time we see the male character . . . and hear him talking - so it can be as lo - fi as you like but we have to hear and see him
And he has to be Italian speaking - its important to have a mix of all different languages
is this ok with you ?
Most people are sending it to me by post
2 people want to use DV so they will email it
I personally like Lo fi - your the only one to pick up on this as a positive
Yeh -Send me all the footage - mistakes and all
if you proceed with section 5 you are really open to deciding the look of the male character however everyone else will be trying to work around this - so in this story there are some limitation. The characters are somewhere between 25 - 40 and western looking (European) the next step for me is too send you the props for your section these props make the links between the section so its important we see them clearly.
What is the best thing for me to buy for the Italian man We could buy a shirt for him and send it to other directors to use when necessary.
And the money £ 200.00 to each director for expenses -

Wed, 09 Aug 2000 16:19:17 +0100

Hi Antony

I am really pleased to hear you are able to join the project
But I have to tell you that two of the sections (4 and 5) have already been taken - 4 is being shot in New York and 5 in Italy.
I am just allocating them in order of who replied first After you have chosen your section I will send you a contract agreement via email
The props and your fee will follow by post
We can discuss any queries or difficulties you have with the script via email
send the unedited footage to London
I hope that all the directors will shoot through Aug and September and we will edit in London Oct/Nov
the footage can be lo-fi or high quality - whatever you want to work with
look forward to hearing from you

Thu, 10 Aug 2000 11:35:27 +0100

Dear Anthony,

The project is funded by the Arts Council of England
I am independent artist who received this funding to make work
DA2 the co-ordinators and project managers
Information about myself can be seen at www.julie9.org
the footage ideally has to be shot through out Aug/ Sept -the deadline is approx Oct/Nov
As its an art project for exhibition in galleries - not a piece for TV or Cinema the quality/type of the footage is up to you This means that we have to stagger the shoots so that the objects /props can be passed around
There are expenses for every director of £200.00.
For this we are asking you to direct a section but not edit the footage the footage is all sent back to London and edited here -
The project should be launched in Nov / Dec
DA2 are in charge of securing Venues as soon as I have confirmation of them I will let you know
When the final work is launched You will have a full credit for your section and a link from the all the main art organisations in London to you own site so that people can contact you directly
I hope this answers all your questions

Thu, 10 Aug 2000 11:42:35 +0100

hi Antony

I'm sorry I should have included the DA2 web site address for you to view it www.da2.org.uk they are the arts organisation co-ordinating the project

Sat, 12 Aug 2000 11:17:06 +0100

Hi michaela

I am really pleased you are able to get involved with the project
yes - each person selects a section
I hope that the directors will shoot over Aug / Sept and I will edit in Oct/Nov so mid Sept in Prague would be fine
The next stage in the process is for you to pick the section you prefer let me know and I'll reserve it for you.
Then I'll send you a contract and the money for expenses when we have decide on a good date for you and I will send the props to you for that date
obviously any queries we'll keep in touch via email
looking forward to working with you

So Hows life in Florence?
Our film project is going really well -

Hi Lahary
Things are all looking good
below is a copy of our contract for you to check out It has to be signed by the production manager and yourself
So I have passed your postal address on to Racheal Drummond (project manager at DA2) rachel@da2.org.uk and she will send the contract to you and then the cheque

Hi Antony Sorry for the delay
Here is a copy of what the contract will look like The contract has to be signed by the project manager and then by yourself.
Could you please send your postal address to Rachel Drummond-Hay <rachel@da2.org.uk> so that she can forward the hard copy contract to you
I'll bee in contact soon
hope all is well

Sat, 09 Sep 2000 09:03:53 +010

Hi Lahary

hope all goes well
I have the package of props ready to send to you by post It measure 45 cm x 32 cm depth 15 cm is this ok to go to your home address ?
I have been checking the script for detail that might help us link it all The less we see of him in your section the better - its difficult because we need to feel his presence but not know what he looks like things like holding hands, lighting her cigarette could be useful....
its important to make use of the things in her makeup bag as these are link to section 1 - where she is packing to go away -
The close up of her drinking wine in a bar is to be cut into the bar scene later (section 6)
so the less we see of the bar the better - just her face drinking is what we need.
Due to the weather I am only going to send a macintosh (jacket) but I think we should forget the hat / scarf thing.
I think its easier to use the actress's own clothes - red skirt, black top
The handbag is important to see - its the prop we see in all the scenes
I know the production office are in the process of sending out the cheques
if you have any queries . problems - just keep in contact

Mon, 11 Sep 2000 10:41:12 +0100

Hello Nuri
good to hear from you
Yes - we would very much like you to be involved with the project.
all you have to do is read the script it's at <www.julie9> its divided into 7 sections but but we only have two sections of the script now free section 3 and section 6 are still free
if you feel able to shoot one of these just email me your choice and we can reserve that for you
Its not important to be really professional - we don't mind if you work with someone else or feel you want to direct yourself.
Thank you for your interest

Tue, 12 Sep 2000 11:41:12 +0100

Strange - I checked the site as soon as I received this and it was fine.
for your reference again its at http://www.julie9.org. give it another try and if it still fails let me know and I send you the sections of the script via email

Tuesday, 12 September 2000 8:41 PM

Hi kate

Yes !
I'm interested in a section being shot in Sydney the hotel scene (section 3 ) would be great to do there
the next stage is for us to send you a contract This has to go to your land address - can you email this to me.
Once we have received it back and signed - we'll send the money to you. And work out together of the best time for you to shoot.
thank you for your interest in the project

Tue, 12 Sep 2000 16:53:37 +0100

Hi Micheala
Thank you for returning the contract so promptly.
Da2 assure me they have put your cheque is in the post .
I noticed from your earlier email that you are in Prague from the 16th sept for ten days is this still the case ? if so I will send the props over to you so that you can start shooting
We could have passed them over in London or I can post them to an address in Prague the package contains a travel bag (small ruck sack) - so although its not heavy - it is a package
which is best for you.

Wed, 13 Sep 2000 00:34:19 +0100

Hi micheala

I am going to post the props to your London address on wednesday morning. The props are often the only thing that all the sections have in common - so as this is the first scene it is really important that we see all the props and the audience registers them so please try and included them as much as you can. You can shoot it on any format you like . . . .. The quality will not be the same through out the whole video. so use whatever you have easy access to. The sound quality is probably more important and I guess with this we just try and get the best quality we can.
good luck

Wed, 13 Sep 2000 00:34:11 +0100

section 6 is now reserved for you
I am really pleased you are able to be involved with the project.
I am a digital artist working in London - exhibiting in galleries, doing residencies etc and teaching part time
The funding comes from the Arts Council of England
This project stems from my work on-line and the desire to look at global collaboration and story telling
at the moment its easier to send the footage via the regular air mail but if you find it easier to transfer it digitally then we can sort that out too
yeh - the same wardrobe and props have to go to every director
at the moment they are in Prague - If the time table runs to plan I think you should expect to shoot in about 4-5 weeks
yeh - now we have reserved section six for you - we will send out a contract to For the contract details please contact
Rachel Drummond-Hay <rachel@da2.org.uk> she is the co-ordinator for the project she works at an arts organisation called DA2 http://www.da2.org.uk
all the best

Wed, 20 Sep 2000 18:42:18 +0100

Hi Nuri
I think that you have one of the most difficult sections here - the key is to use the sound more than the visual.
it will be impossible to match the girl up (At the moment I have no idea what either of them look like ) - but the girls and boys costume and accessories will come to you to use as clues to establish that they are in the bar.
If it were me I wouldn't even try to match them up.
obviously you can use a hand to put the coat or light a cigarette etc etc.... but the key to this section is that they have a huge argument in a bar.... the argument is about them breaking up their romance.
The dialogue is really important and holds the whole story together.
their argument is in your own language.
(we will put the translation in as text over the top later)
Writing this argument is the hardest thing.
They end up shouting - hating each other - and saying cruel things - and she rushes out into the street crying.- Use as much of the details of the bar as you can and as many other people in the bar as you can.
We have to identify that this is a bar very different than one in europe.
This section is full of passion and hate .... and they are drinking which makes the bar section even more intense. we must understand from the dialogue that they were once lovers and are not anymore.
You might try recording their argument in the bar somewhere quiet and then record the sound of the bar when its busy and we can lay them over each other in the edit.
Try and get as much atmosphere of the bar as you can on camera (visually and with sound)
If you think it will prove too difficult to find a bar with people in it we can look for alternatives
section 1 is Micheala in Prague
section 2 is me in London
section 3 is Katie in Sydney
section 4 is Lahary in New york
section 5 is scott in Italy
section 6 is your self
section 7 is Anthony in Hong kong

I will put all this information up online on the site now that I have everyone confirmed
I will also link to other work you have done or collaborated in if you want me to.
I will be very happy to share all the information about the project with you and if you can use any of it in your masters thats great.
I need the rushes sent back- including all the mistakes
Yes I think your right it would be a perfect project for web TV.
all the best

Wed, 20 Sep 2000 18:41:31 +0100

Hi kate
I am so glad your ok to do section 3
The props have to travel around the world - the timing of each section is quite specific and also beyond control so at the moment I don't expect that you will be able to start shooting for about 5 - 6 weeks.
allow about 7 - 10 days to shoot - I hope to complete the edit - late NOV
we are shooting in Prague, London, Florence, New York, Hong Kong and Jakarta so something like a sort of genetic city is what its becoming
it would be brilliant if through the hotel window or at the train station architectural icons from that city were visible. St James or Town Hall are both quite generic names so either would be fine and fit into the notion of a global city
The props are really specific as they are the only thing that hold the sections together - and part process is that these props have to travel the world - so for now I'd like to leave it that we send them to you .

Wed, 20 Sep 2000 18:41:59 +0100

Hi micheala
I posted off all the props to you on wednesday 13th they should have arrived at your house on friday 15th did you get them ?
One of the important things to do whilst filming is to get a still photo of the crew /actors and yourself as a group so that I can put it up on the wall along side the film when it is screened.

Mon, 25 Sep 2000 09:56:51 +0100

hi Michaela

hope all is going well in Prague
do you have any problems regarding the filming ?
I wonder if you are back in London on the 21st sept or 21st october if its october then we need to have the props posted back to London to send to new york ideally by the beginning of October - is this possible ?
we need all the rough video footage sent back not just an edited version so all the out takes and mistakes are useful to us

Mon, 25 Sep 2000 09:57:04 +0100

hi lahary
I am just waiting to find out how everything is going in Prague . so I am not sure how or when the props are coming back to me but I will keep in contact and let you know as soon as I have them back to send onto you.
The other directors have asked me to put a photo of the girl up on the site In my mind this is not essential - but if you have decided on the girl then I guess a photo on the site would help them - is this possible
don't forget when you do the shoot take a photo of your team and yourself so that I can exhibit it in conjunction with the film in the gallery.

Sun, 01 Oct 2000 17:41:03 +0100

Hi michaela I got your video this morning

Wed, 04 Oct 2000 17:36:47 +0100

Hello Scott

The filming seems to be going well.
Prague sent the footage back last week - Ideally the next ones to shoot are you and New York Then its Jakarta and Sydney and finally Hong Kong
You should get the props about 9th Oct
Have you got the cheque yet and did the contract come ok ?
Re the male characters clothes
Do you think you buy something that fits him
It has to be pretty cheap (£20.00 ish) - the more Italian the better - and light weight for the postage.
I would like to put a photograph of the two principle characters onto the front page - do you have a photo of the guy you are using or can you get one to me within the next 10 days ?.
As well as the filming of the section five there are a couple of extra things to cover.
one is a shot of the film being done ( a bit of footage of you and the filmmakers/actor in the process of doing your section )
And a still photo of you and your crew on location -
Both these can be sent back with the footage or as a JPEG
The only props for your section are the cigarettes and lighter You don’t have to include the female character at all to get the story over but if you want to hint at he presence I could send you her handbag and tell you the colours she has been wearing ?
Section 5
EXT - Favourite place
Your favourite place - anywhere that holds a personal story for you.
1 Views of the place
2 He tells a story to her about the place
How this is shot is completely up to you - The male character has to speak in Italian and the sound quality must be good but the style, location shots and dialogue is completely up to you.
To make a link to the next scene do you think at the end of his story he could pause and say to her "lets get a drink")
INT- A Bar
1 CU of him drinking a glass of red wine
1 Her appearance/identity - (face, exact body shape, hair colour etc) - As long as we can tell he is talking to someone
Hope that answers all your queries

Wed, 04 Oct 2000 17:40:07 +0100

Micheala I got the props by post today
Thank you
did you get the cheque for the fee yet ?
hope your move is going ok

Wed, 11 Oct 2000 16:26:05 +0100

Hi Lahary

I am about to post the props to you They told me the package should take 6 days ....
The Prague section came back last week and is looking good
I hope to redo the web site and include a bit of footage for everyone to see
next week.

Wed, 11 Oct 2000 15:52:12 +0100

Hi Nuri

The weekend is going well
We got the footage back from Prague last week and Florence and New York should have completed shooting by the end of october.
This means we are on target for you to shoot early Nov I will be posting the props to you on or around the 29th Oct.
In the script it is important that they argue about something that breaks up their romance, they drink , they are in a public place, and she gets upset and leaves.
we can't see their faces or reveal too much of their body shape we need to rely on the atmosphere of the place to create tension
I guess an option if you cannot find a bar might be a party
The bar location seemed the easiest option to me
I have attached a photo of the female character sent to me from new york I am waiting for a photograph of the male character.
hope all is well

Tue, 17 Oct 2000 13:39:40 +0100

Hi Nuri
I am thinking of updating the site today
I would like to add in for each director a link to there own site if you don’t have a site don’t worry
Hows it going with the bar ?

Tue, 17 Oct 2000 13:36:59 +0100

Hi Antony
I am sorry to have been out of contact for so long
I waited until I could give you a clearer timetable for our project, as things have turned out your section will be the last to be shot ...
if all goes to plan now the props should be with you towards the end of Nov you will receive all the female props - bag - coat etc
We can go over techniques for shooting if you want to nearer the time I am updating the site today and one of the things I wanted to do was to link from your section in my site to your work in your site
any problems let me know

Tue, 17 Oct 2000 13:39:54 +0100

Hi Michaela

I have looked at the footage and it looks great
I love the train sequences
I have a favour to ask
I need to get the sound of a song on the radio in better quality Ideally it would have an radio announcer introducing a song. anything popular in Prague at the moment -
I am going to lay that sound over the opening sequence... This doesn't have to be on DV - it can be a normal cassette
I will begin editing at the end of Nov - so if you send the sound to me anytime between now and mid Nov it would be very useful - do you think this is possible ?
I would like to put a photograph of the people who shot the film on the web section is it possible to get a photo of you
I am updating the site today and hope to put links in to all the other people involved
I thought it would be good to link to your cooking performance

Wed, 18 Oct 2000 10:05:18 +0100

Hi Kate Most of the other participants have sent me an image
just a couple of JPGS of work
I want to try and keep it language free as some of the participants don't have english as a first language
I am glad the schedule is ok I will let you know if any changes occur
I'll be in touch soon
all the best

Wed, 18 Oct 2000 09:44:57 +0100

Hi scott
Glad everything arrived
I got the photo .. great choice for the male lead
Its up on the site now alongside the girl selected by the NY director
I want to put in links from all the participants from the site not a CV but a couple of images of your work or a net site
If you think its appropriate for you I could link to your exhibition
hope all goes well with the filming -

Tue, 31 Oct 2000 17:51:30 +0100

Hello scott

At this stage a black T shirt doesn’t matters – don’t worry No need to shoot all the footage again - so what colour is the jacket ? is that black - did he have jeans and shoes or trainers. When I get your footage back I will put a clip up of the his clothes for people to copy if they can. Looking forward to seeing the footage

Sun, 05 Nov 2000 18:24:35 +0000

Hi scott
Your footage sounds great
can't wait to see the male love interest on the scooter.
I am really glad it all went off well
Now we have the problem of props the jacket has to go to Kate Gauthier In Sydney
and the bag, lighter and cigarettes to indonesia to Nuria W. Soeharto . . . .
Keep the receipts and send them back to me and I'll get the money back to you

Sun, 05 Nov 2000 18:24:16 +0000

Hi Nuri
As requested I have asked the new york crew to send the dress the girl was wearing to you The Florence crew are sending the other props to you - a handbag , pkt of cigarettes and a lighter.
I think they should take about 10 days to get to you.
let me know if they don’t arrive
There is an important change to the mans costume - The Florence crew shot him wearing a Black T shirt (not white like in the script)
and dark blue jeans so could you change to that.
There is a photograph of the girl and the boy up on the site.

Sun, 05 Nov 2000 18:24:26 +0000

Hi kate

Hope your well

The filming seems to be going ok They have just finished in Florence and New York.
I am getting the crew to send the mans jacket onto you and the New York crew is sending you the props.
from NY it should take a week probably but Italy it might take a bit longer.
the Florence crew filmed with the male character wearing a black T shirt (not white as in script) - so that is the costume change from now on - as long as we all follow that from now on it will be fine.
The two people (lovers) have to meet at a station but we can't show their faces.
I guess she can wave out the train window, run along a platform and hug him etc etc - but shooting it and might be quite tricky so if you have problems we can talk it through.
I know the girl wore the coat - but I don't know if they bothered with the scarf as it was too hot - I'll let you know details of the girls costume when I see the footage
The more shots of the details of the hotel room, bathroom , view the better and when the TV is switched on please record a good section of TV and sound. if you want to add any shots of them walking to the hotel , the reception etc etc feel free and any ambient city stuff just add it in.
I hope the props all get to you on time - can you let me know when they arrive

Fri, 10 Nov 2000 10:51:20 +0000

Hi Lahary
I have forwarded the information re the money and bank charges onto DA2. I am going to recommend that the shipping cost be paid either as dollars I'll ask them to get in touch with you
I am sure there is money in the budget to cover this.
Thank you for contacting Dana re the dress
bests julie

Thu, 16 Nov 2000 13:37:40 +0000

hi Scott

Thanks for the clip -
when you turned to camera onto you in the end it really made me laugh .... That actor looks good - perfect choice
if you make an invoice or send the receipts for postage to racheal at DA2 then she is going to send the cash back to you as registered post - cash is to save on the bank charges.
looking forward to seeing the footage

Tue, 21 Nov 2000 12:35:15 +0000

Hi Lahary
I had a meeting with the DA2 last week and they got back to me today re the expenses. They say that as the original contract said £200.00 in sterling that would have to stay the same but for the postal and costume expenses they would send it in cash registered mail - I hope that will work out better for you.
Please send them the receipts or an invoice from you for the expenses and they will be in the return post.
When should I start to worry that the package hasn't arrived in the UK
They said 8 - 9 days to me at the post office but I havnt heard anything I am not sure when it started its journey - can't wait to see it
hope all is well with you

Wed, 29 Nov 2000 09:59:27 +0000

Lahary Do you think there has been some problem with the postal service between the UK an USA
I am assuming you probably posted it at least three weeks ago and as yet I have received nothing - I am beginning to worry a bit.
if you have a reference number perhaps I should go and make an enquiry about the expected arrival date ?

Tue, 28 Nov 2000 15:47:36 +0000

Hi scott I got a note from parcel force today to say there is a package waiting for me so I am off down to collect right now

Thursday, 31st Nov 12:45:21 + 0000

Hi Lahary Getting a bit worried about the post.
I havn’t received the tape and Australia hasn’t received the props Can you help us with any reference numbers to trace the packages

Sun, 03 Dec 2000 16:28:50 +0000

Hi Lahary I am sorry to hear that a member of your family hasn't been well
I do hope everything is ok now.
I am looking forward to receiving the footage it - but, as you have probably already gathered from my other emails I am getting quite worried that the package hasn't arrived in London yet.
I had thought that I might go to the parcel post depo and ask what number of days was an average wait do you remember what date did you posted it and which company it was with?

Sun, 03 Dec 2000 16:28:16 +0000

Hi Nuri
I am so sorry the props took so long to get to you the costume from New york isn't coming to you ! - evidently they had no time to buy a duplicate Dress and they used the actresses own dress in the filming and she has left New York for a while
Please try and film without it. It was only ever intended as an extra prop for you as the scene in the bar has to be shot without revealing the girl.
is it possible to just ask the female character just to wear red and shoot around it I havn't received the footage yet to put an image of the dress on-line ?
and we really have to get going on the filming I am so sorry that the film has come to you in the fasting month .
but the whole strength of the story is that different things will be happening in different countries at different time - so use that to your advantage if you can .....
when you have finished you will need to post the props to hong kong and the video tape to me has to be posted to me in London

Sun, 03 Dec 2000 16:27:54 +0000

Hi kate
have you received the props from NY yet ?
I am getting a bit worried as to where they are
I am about to chase them up
All the best

Tue, 05 Dec 2000 13:23:48 +0000

Hi kate
I have received an email from New York today saying they only posted the parcel to you last week. I have rung up the postal company and they say it can take 3-4 weeks from the usa to australia so its going to arrive with you much later than expected- I'm sorry - I hope this doesn't mess up your schedule too much . . . . .
I have been asked to give a talk about the film and its process and I would like to have a photograph of the participants for each section Is it possible to send me a head and shoulders photograph of yourself by email as a jpeg or by post
Thank you
Hope you are well
fingers crossed for the arrival of that package

Tue, 05 Dec 2000 13:23:39 +0000

Hi Lahary
Thank you for your email. I am so relieved that the footage and the props havn't gone mising. I have contacted Australia today so they can reschedule - I have been asked to give a talk about the process of the work What I would like to show on-line is a photograph of each participant Can you send me a jpeg of a yourself - just a straight head and shoulder shot looking into camera
hope all is well with your family

Tue, 05 Dec 2000 13:23:31 +0000

HI Anthony
I have some news about delays happening with the props that I hope won't upset your filming schedule too much .....
Its a long story but I estimate now that you won't receive the props from Australia until the end of Jan - possibly even beginning of feb We are scheduled to finish the piece in March
I will keep in close contact with you and let you know when I can get a date for you
Thank you for your continuing patience
hope all is well

Tue, 12 Dec 2000 17:39:52 +0000

Hi Kate I am afraid I got my wires crossed with the New York director He posted the tapes off to me late but the props he posted to you were on time. So In fact they should be with you any day as they were posted over a month ago now. !! Yeh I'm sure NTSC is ok - I can just get it transferred I would really like to include a photograph ( just a head and shoulders portrait shot ) of the directors involved in the project on the web site so if you have one can you email it to me as a jpeg or post it to Hope all is going well for you Julie

Wed, 13 Dec 2000 15:17:58 +0000

Thank you for pics
I hope to have them on the net site next week
I will also have up some pics of the scenes from Florence and New York so that you can get an idea of what the characters are wearing etc.
hope the props arrive for you soon

Wed, 13 Dec 2000 15:17:48 +0000

Hi scott

I think you’re the DV footage you shot looks fantastic but I am having trouble playing the hi 8 tape back I think it might have been recored as long play ? which my sony camcorder wont do - so I am going into a facilities house later this week to transfer it . so if you were wondering why I haven't commented on the hi 8 footage thats why . Your footage looks like such fun - it makes me smile just to watch it and think about you buzzing round Florence on a scooter . . . Can you send me a jpeg of yourself for the web site ? I'll be in touch soon ? julie

Wed, 13 Dec 2000 23:33:39 +0000

Scott Thank you for the jpegs
Have worked out the Hi 8 is on NTSC and I can’t play it on our Pal machines so will I’ll transfer it as soon as I can.

Wed, 13 Dec 2000 15:17:53 +0000

I have received the footage from new york today and will put some visuals up on the site for you to see next week- it might help you see what the girl is wearing.
From what I can see in the footage she has a black polo necked ribbed jumper on - a short red skirt, back tights , back shoes. He has on a back T shirt and dark blue jeans .
I hope this helps a bit.

Mon, 18 Dec 2000 13:50:02 +0000

hi lahary
no I havn't got the tapes yet - I guess they are held up in the christmas post in the UK
It was kind of Dana to offer the dress
I think jakarta have already started shooting
so there is no need to send it on .. . thank you for trying

Sun, 24 Dec 2000 00:39:09 +0000

just to say all the best for the christmas and the new year

Sun, 24 Dec 2000 00:39:20 +0000

all the best for christmas and the new year

Sun, 24 Dec 2000 00:38:57 +0000

Hi michaela
Just to wish you all the best for christmas and the new year

Sun, 24 Dec 2000 00:39:43 +0000

No problem at all - I know it has become very difficult timing for you and also a very difficult section
please do it when its best for you
How about doing it just after new year ?
if you want to go over anything before you start I will be away from my email for about 4 days now but back in London on the 28th Dec-

Sat, 30 Dec 2000 20:55:51 +0000

My christmas break was good thank you - its snowing here - so eveything looks very beautiful.
I'm sorry to hear this - we did get something about a riot on CNN news but it didn't really go into detail – are you safe ?.

Sun, 31 Dec 2000 15:28:51 +0000

hi Nuri
the shots you have planned all seems great good luck with the shoot
and a happy new year

Mon, 01 Jan 2001 18:30:31 +0000

Hi Michaela
happy new year
Yeh I still need the sound
thank you for the photo - it looks fine

Wed, 03 Jan 2001 14:26:40 +0000

hi Nuri
if all goes to plan
you don't need to send the props on to anyone
But if you could keep them for a while that would be good

Wed, 03 Jan 2001 14:18:01 +0000

Hi Scott
Thanks for the greetings. I hope you had a good xmas too We got snowed in at my mothers house.
We were completely snowned in for a few days We had a bit of a scare with the film - the props were posted In the USA at the end of Oct and hadn't arrived in Sydney by Christams.
But today I heard that they had arrived – what a relief I have found one place that can transfer NTSC to Pal –
Which is the best way to go about the translation
maybe if you could give me a rough guide of what is being said in each scene that would help the edit and then when I had a more or less done the final cut I could send it to you for a detailed translation
or are you able to translate the whole of the conversations ?
Sydney and Jakarta are shooting now
but hong kong won't get the props for another few weeks so we have time to wait for the translations..

Thu, 04 Jan 2001 11:12:41 +0000

Thanks for letting me know
dont worry
I realise that due to the timing of the project you and Enrico had one of the most difficult periods to shoot in
hope all goes well

Tue, 09 Jan 2001 21:29:59 +0000

Hi Lahary
I received the tape yesterday - yipee
No explanation of why it took so long- I am pleased to receive it I have only managed a quick glance through it today From what I see the footage looks great.
Is some of it shot on real16 mm film or is this look done on after effects very beautiful whatever
Is this an edited version – some of the footage seems to have been edited already ? Thank you for all the time and effort you have put into the project
I’ll keep in touch

Thu, 11 Jan 2001 13:12:04 +0000

Dear Lahary Yeh - I was so pleased to see the tape arrive I just took a quick look at it I hadn't watched it through with reference to the email you sent earlier
I got an email from kate in Sydney a couple of days ago saying the props arrived on the 24th dec and I rang DA2 this morning and they have the paper work and are sending the money registered post today
The web site has some changes you might like to check out.

Thu, 11 Jan 2001 14:23:41 +0000

hope your well
and that your filming is going well ......
the web site has been updated with some images and photos and changes of text which you might like to look at.
I have put up some behind the scenes information for your section which I think is really interesting. The text is an attempt to put the process in context it
see what you think.

Thu, 11 Jan 2001 14:23:04 +0000

Dear Anthony
Sydney and Jakarta are filming now and should be posting the props onto you next week.
I estimate end of Jan that they will arrive with you
hope you are well
I'll keep in touch

Thu, 11 Jan 2001 14:23:34 +0000

Just to wish you good luck with the filming Did you manage to get the hotel room you wanted ?
I have uploaded some images and clips onto the site which I think you might enjoy ! !
I'm really looking forward to seeing your stuff When you have finished the props are posted onto Mr. Yau Yik Yuk
….. Hong Kong.
hope all goes well

Thu, 11 Jan 2001 14:23:28 +0000

Hi Scott
I am picking up the transfer from NTSC on Friday
really looking forward to seeing that stuff
I have just updated the web site
check it out I think there are a couple of things that might make you laugh
hope your doing well

Tue, 16 Jan 2001 20:59:14 +0000

Hi Nuri
That all sounds fantastic
Its incredible that the postage can be so fast one of the main problems I have had is that the postage has been so slow
I think it is much better to go with the culture of the country.
that will make the film more interesting when it all comes together.
congratulations on your shoot
thank you for all your hard work all the very best wishes

Tue, 23 Jan 2001 19:55:18 +0000

I havn't actually got the package yet - Last friday I had a note through my door saying they had called to deliver but no-one was in.- I can go and collect it which I will do tomorrow
so dont worry it is in the UK

Tue, 23 Jan 2001 21:27:14 +0000

Hi Kate Has all gone well with the shoot ?

Wed, 24 Jan 2001 11:59:42 +0000

I’m really sorry to hear about your web firm going belly up I hope you get some other work soon
good luck

Wed, 24 Jan 2001 12:00:18 +0000

Hi scott
good to hear from you
The translation is great
I might be nice to get some extra sound stuff I have used some of the church bells I heard on your tape I 'll get in touch if I need anything.
I had the tape transferred to PAL and there is some incredible footage very very beautiful I love the light on the architecture.
But some has green flashes appeared over some it when I asked them they said it was on the original- I don't mention this because it effects me, I have more than enough good Footage to use, I mention it just to let you know that in the transfer it came out - I don't know if its something wrong with the camera or not. - anyway I just mention this for your information

Bye for now

Thu, 25 Jan 2001 13:06:31 +0000

Dear Anthony

I have heard from Australia that the props are being posted to you On Thursday 25th Jan.
If they use Federal express this means that they should arrive With you on Monday or Tuesday 30th 31st.
Fedex from HK to London is about 3 working days

She's alone and wrecked
You can show bits of the girl
Hands details like or feet /legs walking
She has argued with her boyfriend in section 6
And she is angry, annoyed and upset at being left on her own in a city.
General shots of the street ?
People, -
In London we have a lot of street people (usually homeless)
But I am not sure if thing like that happens in HK.
I saw a documentary on TV last week about homeless men in HK - sleeping in the parks - the TV doc pointed out how difficult it was for them because they saw it as a failure on their part.
It would be good to get some of these new cultural changes on film All these cultural difference are really fascinating and if you can try and include as much of the different street life as possible
Nutters ? in English this is slang for people doing crazy things
I don’t know if you have that sort of thing on the streets in the morning if not .

Try and translate this into what you think appropriate
Maybe just ordinary morning stuff to you that would be unusual to us like Whatever you think shows the essence of your city
Some CU details of objects, graphics, would be good too I hope this makes the language less confusing
The essence of your section is that a girl is wandering through the streets
Life going on around her And she is angry and upset talking to herself about how much she hates her boyfriend and looking at the things around her
All the best

Thu, 25 Jan 2001 15:34:39 +0000

Anthony Da 2 have moved the exhibition of the film
to a date later in March so I wont need the footage to edit from until 26th feb .......
This gives you more time to work things out,
hope all is well

Thu, 25 Jan 2001 11:10:05 +0000

Hi Kate
If you use Federal express ( you probably already know this but ) and they said from Sydney to London is (maximum) three days which is fantastic
1/2 a kilo is 78.00 aus dollars but I doubt the tape will weigh that much To HK it should take (maximum) 3 days too and can make the props package lighter now.
All you have to send to HK is the coat, the small red bag, the cigarettes and the lighter. all the other stuff you can keep or throw away.
We will get the money back to you in cash very quickly.
are you ok to do this ? address's are
tape to
julie myers UK
props to
Mr. Yau Yik Yuk , Hong Kong.
all the very best

Tue, 30 Jan 2001 10:41:22 +0000

Hi Nuri
I picked up the tape last week from Fedex.
and looked at it over the weekend - I think the footage looks great
The actors do really well and the bar is a perfect and as you say , the atmosphere and action is very different from that of a european film. . . .which is fantastic - just what the process needs.
I like the shots of the crew with you and Enrico
I really like the way the jealousy thing is played out with the other girl .
I will be editing from the end of Feb to early march We will have copies for you to view towards the end of March.
I have a query
For the music to be able to link the sections together I thought I might try and find the music that was playing in your bar - do you remember what this is ? and I can try and search the internet for it
I have passed on the receipt for postage to DA2
They said they are going to send the money registered post to you. I guess this should be with you in about a week.
but I will chase it up for you next week if nothing has happened.
Thank you again to you and enrico for all your efforts I will keep you in touch with everything that happens with the project exhibitions , screenings etc

Thu, 01 Feb 2001 12:46:25 +0000

HI Anthony

Have you received the props for the filming yet ? Julie

Sat, 03 Feb 2001 09:03:39 +0000

Yes If its possible the props and the tape should come back together to the uk
They should take about three days by fedex.
if you enclose the receipt for the postage we will send you the money back by return of post.
please let me know if there are any problems or the script is unclear
hope all goes well

Tue, 06 Feb 2001 10:16:44 +0000

Hi Anthony
Try and keep the face of the actress hidden try and use her clothes, hands, feet to indicate her presence its ok to see a bit of her.
maybe cover part of her face with her face with her hands or film her from a distance.
nothing that reveals her complete face.
it depends most other directors have needed to shoot about 15- 20 mins but I will edit this down
its just meant to be early in the morning and she is awake from the night before and other people are just getting up.
No its a detail that can be taken out
hope all goes well

Tue, 06 Feb 2001 10:16:34 +0000

Hi Kate
I heard today that Anthony had received the props in HK a few days a go - so that great.
all the best Julie

Tue, 06 Feb 2001 15:40:58 +0000

Hi Kate Don't worry at all This sort of thing is totally normal in the whole scheme of things . I guess thats the challenge of the edit and the nature of the project. I am sorry for you about the mix up with the sound but don’t worry the whole structure of this project is that things will go wrong and bits will be missing. I can probably sort something out in the edit, so don’t worry. my feeling is forget about shooting the train station scene if the props have already gone off to HK The thing to do now is for me to look at the tape and work it out ... I honestly think we can just work with what we have. because thats the whole point of the process. all the best julie

Tue, 06 Feb 2001 15:57:14 +0000

Dear Kate
I have had a rethink on the station scene
I am trying to think of ways of illustrating that the two people meet within the limitations that we have.
Maybe its enough just to shoot a train arriving into a station.
I think just to establish her train had arrived and that would be would be fine.
Is this possible ?

Wed, 07 Feb 2001 21:21:26 +0000

It will all look fine in the end – don’t worry

Thu, 08 Feb 2001 22:02:04 +0000

Hi Michaela
Yeh- thank you I got the sound tape this morning.
I havn't had chance to play it yet but Thank you for making it
all the best

Fri, 23 Feb 2001 21:42:39 +0000

Hi Kate

I received your footage this morning I think it looks fantastic
I love the shots you've chosen very clean and clear and good light.
loads of close ups and lots of establishing shots - brilliant . I think the hotel room looks excellent.
makes me want to book in right now and sit on that balcony
The male character is good too He looks just like the guy from Italy ( except taller)
I loved it when he went to the bed and lay down and began to watch the TV . . . . . .I kept thinking ooops were going to see his face but no - a lovely pair of size 12 shoes obscured our view
It is a shame about the sound but I can go and pick up some stuff . . . . .just out of interest
where is that hotel and whats it like ?
I thought it might be fun to link to things and locations on the website.
Like link to the hotels web site.
I guess the more sort of normal information I have about the shots there location, how things were shot, when with who story behind the scenes sort of thing the more I can include in the web site as part of the process
so if you think of anything that might locate it a bit or give some insight into how it was achieved then drop it in an email to me.
its really weird looking at footage of places I have never been. Australia, from what I see, looks very familiar and yet very different.
The station looks architecturally just like Kings Cross in London but and then it has station masters in shorts !!
Its really makes you feel that the world is quite similar but very different in the smaller details…..
Thank you for your footage ...
I am doing the first part of the edit now.
What I didn't see in the package was the receipts for postage( the props and the tape)
DA2 will send the money straight back to you in cash registered post. so if you want to fax them to Rachel at do you have their address ?
all the best

Ps . . . it made me laugh that the tape arrived wrapped in a serviette - I can just imagine your husband dashing round looking for something to wrap the tapes in and settling for a serviette Its nice to have the human touch thrown in amongst all this digital Technology

Fri, 23 Feb 2001 11:18:18 +0000

Hi Nuri
I have been checking up on your money with DA2
I apologise for the delay
It will be with you very shortly
The editing is going really well
I will try and put more up on the web site soon
